Fic: Fix You
Apr. 1st, 2011 12:50 amTitle: Fix You
Author: the_huffster
Pairing: Buffy/Giles
Rating: G
Timeline: Two years after 'Someone Like You'
Synopsis: When Giles' life takes a turn for the worse, the only person he can turn to is Buffy. Based loosely on Coldplay's 'Fix You'
Author's Note: I was talked into a follow-up for 'Someone Like You'. This isn't exactly happy, but there is hope. And I also left it to where another follow-up could be written if that's what people want.
Rupert Giles laughed as the toddler in his arms told him about the adventure he had gone on with his stuffed turtle, Wendell. The bright green eyes of the child lit up with excitement as he recounted the events of The Battle of Lego Tower (or as he said it, “Battle of ‘Ego Towa”) to his father.
“What happened then?” Giles asked, his dark green eyes quickly scanning the surrounding area for the friends he was waiting for.
“We saved the werld!” Trenton exclaimed, flinging his hands back and nearly falling out of his father’s arms. “Like ‘oo!”
That response coaxed a grin from the Watcher, something that didn’t come as easily as it had in the past. To anyone outside of Giles’ family and extended family, Trenton Rupert Giles seemed like any other two year old; energetic, imaginative and healthy. The only thing out of the ordinary about Trenton was the large, jagged scar that ran from his collarbone to the middle of his chest, curtsey of a demon attack that happened eight months ago. After the attack, things had gone downhill for the father; arguments about the dangers of his job occurred daily with his wife and research had taken over Giles’ life for two weeks as he looked for a cure to the poison that had been injected into his son.
While he hadn’t found anything that would save his son, Giles had managed to find something that would significantly ease the pain and slow down the effects- giving Trenton five to ten years to live, instead of the three to six months. He hated looking at his son and knowing that he would only live to see his twelfth birthday at most, and his wife refused to acknowledge that fact. So the only person, other than Willow and Xander, that Giles could talk to was Buffy. When everything started getting to Giles, it was the Slayer he turned to for comfort, support and sympathy.
Six months after Trenton had been attacked, Giles found himself in the middle of a divorce with accusations of sleeping with Buffy.
“Why else would you be spending so much time with her?” Lauren had yelled when she confronted him about it. “I get that she’s your friend, but I’m your wife! I’m the one you talk to when things become too much for you, Rupert! Not her!”
“How can I talk to you when you act like Trenton isn’t dying because of some bloody demon?!”
The argument had continued for a few more hours, resulting in Giles standing alone in the bedroom as Lauren stormed out of the house with a suitcase. The only time he ever had to talk to her was the days Trenton stayed with her, but even those were becoming less and less as the two year old grew closer with Buffy.
“Buffy!” the toddler’s voice pulled Giles back to reality as he squirmed to be let down.
As soon as his feet touched the ground, Trenton was running as fast he could towards Buffy and Willow. In the two years that had passed since Buffy had sought him out for closure, her and Willow had moved into an apartment thirty minutes from where he was living and ten minutes from the house Xander owned. Buffy had had no intentions of living in the same area as Giles, but Willow had insisted- saying that the rent would be much cheaper if she had a roommate, and that it would be nice to be able to see everyone on a daily basis. So the Slayer caved and moved in with her best friend a year ago.
“Careful,” Buffy giggled as she caught Trenton before his face hit the pavement, laughing as he glared at his shoes.
He looked up at her, tilting his head to the side as she continued to laugh.
“You are too much like your dad,” Buffy laughed as she ruffled his light brown hair. “Don’t you think, Will?”
“Of course he is!” the red head agreed, smiling at the boy. “Hey, Trent.”
“Illow!” he waved, a grin spreading on his face.
“How come you can say Buffy’s name right, but not mine?” she teased as they made their way over to Giles.
“Huh?” Trenton looked between the two women, pointing to each one as he said their name. “Illow…Buffy.”
The two friends just laughed, which only confused Trenton even more. But his confusion was soon forgotten as he caught sight of Xander walking over to them.
“Sander!”
“T-Bird!” Xander yelled as he jogged the rest of the way over to the group, smiling at the glare Giles was sending him.
“Do not call my son that awful name,” he warned as he took Trenton back into his arms, giving Buffy and Willow a smile each.
“But he likes it, don’t ya Trent?” the toddler nodded his head eagerly, smiling wider at the giggles from Buffy and Willow. “See, G-Man?”
“Don’t call me that,”
The three young adults busted into laughter at the traditional exchange, causing Trenton to laugh as well.

“See? This is nice,” Xander pointed out as everyone waited for their lunch to arrive while Trenton was furiously coloring the picture that came with his menu. “The four Scoobies together for something non-apocalyptic.”
“Fibe.” Trenton argued, one of his fingers pointing at himself.
“Sorry, Trent.” Willow smiled as she took a sip of her Sprite. “You’re not old enough to be a Scooby,”
“Scappy?” he gave a hopeful smile as he looked at the four adults.
“Yeah, you can be Scrappy.” Buffy replied as she picked up an unused crayon. “Mind if I help you color?”
Giles just laughed as he listened to his son tell Buffy she was coloring wrong, which also earned laughs from the other two Scoobies. It was a few more minutes before the food arrived, an excited expression showing on the two year old’s face when he saw his lunch.
“Dinasoars! Rawr!” Trenton yelled, moving his arms as if he was a dinosaur.
“Trenton, inside voice.” Giles gently scolded, holding back the smile that was tugging at the corner of his mouth.
“Oh…’kay.” He nodded, hunching over as he lowered his voice to a whisper. “Dinasoars. Rawr.”
“Too cute, “ Willow gushed as Trenton began eating his dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets, making soft roars before chomping on the food. “I bet you were like that when you were two, Giles.”
“I can assure that my lunch did not come shaped like prehistoric reptiles,” the Watcher replied.
“Not ‘eptitles. Dinasoars!” the toddler corrected, giving his father The Glare. “Silly, Daddy.”
The rest of the lunch was spent in much the same fashion, and two hours later Giles found himself back at his house with a sleeping Trenton and Buffy. Trenton was curled up on the couch, using Buffy’s thigh as a pillow, while Giles sat on the other end of the couch.
“How are things, Giles?” Buffy asked after a while, his fingers absently playing with Trenton’s soft hair.
“Some days are better than others,” he whispered, his hand lightly resting on his son’s back. “Some days I just feel like giving up, especially when he looks at me and says he wants to be just like me when he grows up.”
A moment of silence fell over them as they both thought about the toddler’s future.
“I don’t think I can look at him when he starts telling me he wants to play sports for a living, or that he wants to be a rock star. Or that he wants to be a firefighter or a police officer…” Giles swallowed the lump that formed in his throat, his gaze drifting to his napping son. “I can’t think about what kind of man he’ll grow up to be. I’ll never be able to give him advice on girls and…”
Buffy moved her hand to cover his when she heard the catch in his voice. Tears welled in her hazel eyes when she noticed how hard he was trying to keep from crying, his eyes swimming in unshed tears. Seeing him so helpless and broken, so defeated, broke her heart.
“You’re not alone, Giles.” She whispered as she carefully lifted Trenton’s head off her thigh, moving to sit in the small spot next to her Watcher. “Me, Willow and Xander will be right by your side the whole time. When things get too much for you, we’ll be right here to help you get through it.”
She placed her hand on his cheek, turning until his gaze was fixed on her. They had come so far in the past two years, re-establishing their friendship and not letting their feelings interfere with each of their relationships- although Buffy couldn’t bring herself to get into a serious relationship. And after everything they had been through, both romantically and not romantically, this wasn’t what either deserved.
Giles didn’t deserve to have his son taken from him at a young age, nor did he deserve to have his wife leave him the way she did. And Buffy didn’t deserve to see the man she loved be in so much pain with nothing to help him. She knew from experience that words did little to ease the hurt of losing a loved one, and she just wished there was something she could do.
“I can’t wake up after he’s gone,” his voice was shaky as he struggled to hold back his tears. “Not when all I’ll think about is the future Trenton was robbed of. It’s not fair, Buffy. He’s too young…”
“You don’t have to deal with the aftermath by yourself,” she reminded him, her thumb gently rubbed his cheek. “We’ll still be here. And when you wake up in the middle of the night crying for Trenton, I’ll be right there to hold you for the rest of the night. If you want, that is.”
If Giles had any objections to her telling him that she wanted another chance at a relationship with him, he didn’t voice them. All he did was wrap his arms around her and hold her tight as he let the tears finally fall, Buffy holding him just as tightly as her tears fell. And when Giles whispered a soft ‘I love you’ before claiming her lips in an urgent kiss, Buffy vowed she would do whatever it took to help him through this.

Date: 2011-04-01 03:24 pm (UTC)I'm thinking of writing a sequel just cos I need to have something turn out right for Giles. I love the fact that I hate Giles' kid dying when I'm the one who wrote it...and I have a feeling that this is gonna turn into a mini series real fast lol

Date: 2011-04-03 11:56 am (UTC)Second, oh my gosh. You made Trenton soo effing cute! I mean just look at this part “Dinasoars!
“Dinasoars. Rawr.” I was giggling at his cuteness.
I love the Buffy/Giles-ness. I love that they are taking comfort in each other. Though I didn't need any more reason to hate Giles' wife, the way she leaves was just like "Well fuck you too. . . no, you know what? Good! No one wanted you here anyways!"
I'm not gonna say write a sequel because I already know you are, but I will say HURRY UP!
-waits impatiently-

Date: 2011-04-03 04:24 pm (UTC)Second, now do you see why I'm having such a hard time with the whole idea of him dying?! Trenton is just too adorable!!!! And what I have planned out for the sequel is just, 'Awwwwwww! Trenton!'
And yeah, the wife....your reaction is just what I was thinking when I writing that whole background bit.
And for what I have planned for the sequel is (again) gonna give me the option write another one if I choose (meaning if people want me to), as well as giving me two choices as far as Trenton is concerned. So I'm thinking about that one....if the Sims can stop distracting me lol

Yeah I think you should continue after the next one (even though I haven't even read it yet)
UGH SIMS STOP DISTRACTING HER SO SHE CAN WRITE! -SHAKES FIST-

Date: 2011-04-03 04:51 pm (UTC)Awww I could make you one but it would be awhile ( I've been up for like 20 hours) before it would get done. . . and I'd need a picture. I only got my screencap cause I have that episode on my computer since some of them are done downloading (but not all of them).
