Timeline: Season 4 AU
Synopsis: Giles has landed a job teaching at UC Sunnydale after defeating the Mayor and Buffy ends up, unknowingly, taking Giles' class. Surely all this extra time together won't affect their relationship, right?
“No way,” Buffy Summers breathed as she walked into her ancient world history class, effectively blocking the door as she stared at the front of the room.
“Can you move?” a voice behind her brought her out of her shock enough to claim a seat in back of the room, not trusting herself to sit in the front.
Buffy watched in amusement as her professor stared a piece of paper in shock while the students finished piling in.
The class wasn’t large at all, which meant he spotted her in the back of the room easily. She wasn’t entirely sure how she had missed the name of the professor but then again, she hadn’t exactly looked to see who was teaching her classes. Olive green eyes locked on her, and all she could do was shrug and lean back in her chair as the class started.
This was going to be a very interesting class.

“Miss Summers, could you stay for a few moments?” she smiled at the question.
Buffy waited until the rest of the class had left before walking over to her professor, a grin on her face as she perched herself up on his desk. The glare she received just caused her grin to widen even more.
“Come on, Giles!” his lack of talking was starting to get to her. “It’s not like I knew you were teaching this class,”
“Do you just see what classes you have, and not see who your instructor is?” the ex-Watcher sighed, plopping into the chair behind his desk when she nodded her head. “Buffy…”
“Giles, what’s the big? So what if I know you outside of class…”
“I don’t need anyone thinking that I’m going to give you special treatment,”
“But that’s the thing,” Buffy protested. “You would never treat me any different than your other students. If anything, you’d make things harder for me because you know exactly how much I slack in school and you won’t let that happen. Right?”
“No. If you decide to slack than you’ll have to suffer the consequences, Buffy.” Giles stated as he began gathering up what few papers he had on his desk, smirking at Buffy’s expression.
“That wasn’t funny!” she giggled as she slapped his shoulder, rolling her eyes at his overdramatic wince. “Anyways, you teaching the class just makes things a whole lot easier. This way I don’t have to explain to you what I’m learning in class,”
They shared a smile before leaving the classroom, Giles turning around to lock up the room before continuing on his way to his office. As soon as they had entered his office, Buffy made her way over to his desk and flopped in his chair. She carefully placed her feet up on the desk, only to remove them at Giles’ glare.
“Don’t you have class?” he asked as he leaned against the corner of the desk.
“Nope. My last class ends at 3:20, and that happens to be your class.” She answered as she spun the chair from side to side until Giles grabbed the top of the chair, effectively stopping her. “Sorry. Anyways, why? Are you trying to get rid of me?”
“No, I was just curious.” He assured her.
“Or were you asking because you have another class or some other important professor stuff?”
“No. Like I said, I was just curious.”
Buffy laughed before leaning up enough to snag the cookie Giles had just picked up, smiling sweetly at him as she took a bite. He shook his head as he got another one while the Slayer just marveled at the fact that her ex-Watcher always seemed to pull food out of thin air. They spent the next ten minutes making plans to have a Scooby Gang get together for that Friday- which would consist of some sort of fun activity, a few hours slaying and then back to Giles’ apartment for takeout and a night of movies.
“I was thinking it could be a weekly thing, you know?” Buffy added, shrugging at the question in Giles’ eyes. “I just don’t want us to have a falling out. You three are my best friends, and I don’t wanna lose you because our schedules were so busy we couldn’t make time for each other.”
“Buffy, I can assure you that you won’t lose any of us.” Giles smiled as he offered Buffy the last cookie.
“You can’t speak for Will and Xand, Giles.” She pointed out, breaking the cookie in half and offering him one half.
“Fair enough,” he took a small bite of the snack, chewing it quickly. “But I know you won’t lose me, Buffy. I didn’t leave when I got fired, did I?”
“You got fired in the middle of the school year, I don’t think you’re the kind of guy to leave a job half through the year.” She sighed as she played with a loose thread on the hem of her shirt.
“True,” he agreed, tapping his fingers on the small cast on his right wrist. “But, the high school’s gone and I’m still here aren’t I?”
“Yeah but…”
“I’m not going anywhere, Buffy. They only way I’ll leave is if you tell me you don’t want me around anymore,” he was hoping to leave it at that, but the questioning look on Buffy’s face wouldn’t let him. “If your best friend no longer wanted you around, would you stay?”
“Well…no, but…” her head snapped up and she gaped at him. “I’m your best friend?”
“Well…yes.”
The Slayer smiled before giggling at the blush that crept up his face. They fell into a comfortable silence as Buffy continued to pull at the loose thread on her shirt while Giles tried to ignore the itch underneath his cast. Every time he would let out a frustrated grunt, she couldn’t help but laugh- which always earned her a glare.
“I’m sorry, Giles. It’s just…” another fit of giggles as Giles accidently hit the cast against the desk when he couldn’t get to the itch. “It’s funny seeing something so small get you this frustrated.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re amused.” He said through gritted teeth as he cradled the broken wrist against his chest, wincing at the throb under the cast. “I can’t wait to get this bloody cast off!”
“At least it wasn’t your left wrist,” the blonde pointed out.
Giles rolled his eyes before glaring at the plaster, almost as if he could scare the itch away. When it was becoming clear that Giles was getting more frustrated, Buffy decided to try and take his mind off of the itch.
“So how was your first day?” she ducked her head in an attempt to get in his line of vision.
“It was good,” her plan seemed to have work since he was now focusing on the conversation and not on his wrist. “Even though there wasn’t much interaction with my classes, the students seem…”
“The opposite of how me and Xander were in high school?” the Slayer offered when he trailed off.
“Yes,” he chuckled. “Although, there is this one student in one of my classes. I know her outside of the class, and she’s always hanging around me with her friends. I thought by teaching this class I would get some time away from her, but that isn’t the case.”
“She’s one of those people you just can’t seem to get rid of no matter how hard you try, huh?”
“Exactly. She’s just dreadful,” the ex-Watcher gave her a quick smile. “And how was your first day?”
“It was great! Will’s in my psych class, which is good because I can just tell that I’m gonna struggle in that class already.” The blonde began, sitting up in the chair. “My professors are all just…eh. Except for one,”
“Oh?”
“Yeah. He worked at the high school and I know him outside of school too. And it’s always so hard trying not to fall asleep when he talks to me in general- he’s SO boring, Giles! You have no idea! I just know that his class is gonna be the one where I have try twice as hard not to fall asleep in.”
By this time, both were trying hard not to break out into a grin at each other’s teasing. Buffy seemed to be doing a much better job at the task then Giles- who kept letting a few giggles slip every now and then.
“And now I just know that whenever I see him outside of class, all he’s gonna talk about is the class and try his hardest to make sure I don’t have a social life.” She finished, biting her bottom lip to keep from smiling.
“You mean someone’s trying to take my place in making you a social hermit?” he put on an appalled face, and that seemed to be the breaking point for both of them.
Buffy nearly fell out of the chair as she doubled over with laughter while Giles slid down the desk to sit on the floor, clutching his sides as he fell on of his sides from laughing. They spent the next couple of moments laughing and trying to compose themselves, Buffy eventually having to help Giles back to his feet since it was taking him much longer for his laughter to die down.
"Not to cut our conversation short, but I have to meet Willow at the Espresso Pump right now.” She said when she caught the time on Giles’ watch. “Wanna come with?”
“As tempting as it is, I’m trying to avoid a sugar induced Willow since last time.” He made a gesture to the plaster on his wrist.
“She still feels bad about that,” as Giles opened his mouth to say something, Buffy continued. “I know you’ve told her that you aren’t mad at her, she just feels bad. Last week she heard you complaining about the cast, and I had to physically stop her from apologizing again. Anyways, how much longer until you can get it taken off?”
“Two to three more months,” he gave her a sarcastic smile, to which she just rolled her eyes.
“Hey, it could’ve been worse. It could’ve been your arm, your hand, your leg, your collarbone- again…just be lucky it was your wrist.”
“Oh yes, of course.” Giles chuckled at the stern glare Buffy gave him. “Thank you for sharing that bit of wisdom with me, Buffy. However shall I repay you?”
“Well…you can get a mocha with me and Will,”
“I’ll join you next time,” he promised.
“You better.” Buffy smiled as she made her way out of his office. “I’ll see you later, Watcher-mine!”

“No way.” Willow gasped, staring at Buffy as they sat at one of the tables.
“That’s what I said when I walked into class,” she giggled, taking a sip of her mocha. “Giles wigged when he saw me in the class, but all is of the good now.”
“Isn’t he afraid that someone might think he’s going to treat you different than the rest of the class?” the redhead asked.
“He was at first, but no one knows that me and Giles know each other.” Buffy shrugged as she swirled her straw in her cup. “This is the class that I have to pass with awesome grades,”
“Why?”
“He’s only a part-time professor, Will. If everyone does great in his class, he’ll probably get switched to full-time.”
“Oh yeah,” Willow agreed as she took a gulp of her mocha. “Ow! Brain freeze!”
Buffy nearly tipped over her cup as she burst out laughing.
