Timeline: Season 4 AU
Synopsis: Giles has landed a job teaching at UC Sunnydale after defeating the Mayor and Buffy ends up, unknowingly, taking Giles' class. Surely all this extra time together won't affect their relationship, right?
She knew she should be back in her dorm studying for one of her classes, but she just couldn’t find the motivation to do that. So instead of doing any of her course work, Buffy had made her way to Giles’ flat and walked straight in.
“Giles?” she called out, giggling as he nearly fell off his couch.
“You should really learn to knock, Buffy.” He muttered as he composed himself, stopping her giggling with a glare. “I thought you weren’t suppose to be here for a few hours,”
“Yeah, but I don’t wanna study and Willow’s off with Oz before our movie night. And Xander’s with Anya,” she explained as she plopped on the couch, eyeing the book in Giles’ hand. “Why are you reading ‘Salem’s Lot?”
“I like it,” was all he said as he marked his place in the book before setting it on the coffee table, grinning at the unbelievable expression on the Slayer’s face.
“Really? You’re enjoying reading a book about vampires?” she rolled her eyes when he just grinned at her, moving to lean against the arm of the couch. “It’s because the main character is like you, isn’t it?”
“I never thought about that,” he mused before giving her a curious look. “How would you know what Ben is like?”
“I may have read it before…” she mumbled.
“Did you think Ben was like me?”
His tone let her know that he was enjoying this bit of information more than he should be. Buffy just rolled her eyes before nudging his shoulder with her foot.
“Shouldn’t you be offering to get me something to drink?” she pointed out, laughing when he exaggerated the force of her nudge. “What kind of host are you anyways, Giles?”
“That’s Professor Giles to you,” he smiled as he grabbed her ankle when she went to kick his shoulder again, laughing at her half-hearted struggle. “And if you can just walk right on in without knocking, then you can serve yourself.”
Buffy crossed her arms over her chest as she muttered something about not being that thirsty. A comfortable silence settled over them as they sat on the couch, neither one of them commenting on the fact that Giles’ fingers was tracing patterns on the inside of her calf.
“You now, I used to think this was a new you.” Buffy piped up.
“I wasn’t aware that there was a new me,” Giles replied, giving her a sideways glance.
“Yeah. You wear jeans and t-shirts when you aren’t teaching, and when you are teaching you wear slacks and button down shirts, occasionally throwing in a tie. You joke around, you go out with the gang and me to the Bronze…the list goes on.” She explained, raising her eyebrow when he opened his mouth to cut her off. “But the more I think about it, this isn’t a new you. It’s just you without the Council trying to make you act like someone you aren’t.”
Giles just stared at her, making her wish she could take back what she had said.
“If any of that made sense,” she muttered as she looked at the ex-Watcher.
“Do you have an issue with this…non-new me?” he smiled when she giggled at his wording.
“No,” there was no hesitation when she answered.
They just shared a smile before Giles asked her how her first week of college went, both looking for a way to kill time before their movie night with Xander and Willow.

“Okay, everyone get a movie?” Willow asked as they met back up in the middle of the video store, each one holding a movie in their hands. “Buffy, you go first.”
“I got The Shinning,” she held out her pick before looking over at the red head. “Willow, you next.”
“Stand By Me, instant classic.” Willow said as a grin spread on her face. “It reminds me of us. Not that I’m saying that we’ll lose touch because, you know, we won’t. Unless something awful happens, which it won’t and, and…someone feel free to stop me at any time.”
Willow glared at each of them as they laughed at her rambling before she let a giggle or two out. It took them a few moments to compose themselves before Xander announced that it was Giles’ turn to share his pick.
“I picked Batman,” he replied, a shy smile appearing at the looks on the others’ faces.
“Wait, which one?” Xander tilted his head back slightly, making the moment more dramatic than it should have been.
“Tim Burton’s 1989 movie with Jack Nicholson as The Joker,” the older man said without much thought while he cleaned his glasses, raising an eyebrow at the shocked expressions. “Am I not allowed to know information about one of my favorite movies?”
“Who are you and what have you done to G-Man?” Xander questioned, narrowing his eyes at the unusual behavior.
“Xand, leave him alone.” Buffy shook her head before smiling at Giles. “I learn something new every day. What did you pick, Xander?”
“I picked the greatest scary movie of all time. Drum roll please,” he began, holding the video behind his back as a grin spread across his face. “May I present to you unworthy movie-watchers…Stephen King’s IT!”
“No! Absolutely not!” Giles yelped, automatically turning his eyes down to the faded blue carpet of the video store. “You’re going to put that damn movie back and get another one,”
“Oh my God,” all three of them laughed once they realized what was happening.
“You’re afraid of clowns,” Buffy said, biting her lip to keep from laughing at the glare the ex-Watcher sent her. “Xander, go pick a different one.”
“Fine, fine. C’mon, Will.” He slumped back into the horror section, grumbling about how some people needed to over some childhood fears like he did.
“I didn’t think you had any fears like that,” Buffy smiled as she stood next to Giles. “And here I was starting to think you were Superman, being all fearless and what not.”
“Very funny, Buffy.” He grumbled as he ran a hand through his hair, glaring at her from the corner of his eye.
Why are you afraid of clowns?” the Slayer asked, curiosity shining in her hazel eyes.
“When I was much younger, I went to the circus and got separated from my parents. I was terrified and the group of clowns that surrounded me did nothing to help that fear,” he explained, shuddering at the memory.
“Awwww, poor baby.” Buffy giggled before turning her attention to Xander and Willow as they walked back over, Xander holding out a copy of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
After they rented the movies, the group made a quick stop at a grocery store to stock up on snacks and drinks before heading to Giles’ apartment to drop off the supplies. Once everything was put away, they prepared for their patrol while Xander cracked jokes when he saw fit.
“You gonna try to not get hit on the head this time, Giles?” he asked on their way out the door.
“Ha bloody ha,” Giles muttered before he smacked Xander on the back of the head.

The door flew open as Buffy dragged Giles into his apartment, carefully dropping him on the couch as Willow helped a limping Xander inside. Once Xander was sitting on the armchair, the red haired Wicca rushed to the bathroom to get the first aid kit while Buffy ripped off Giles’ sleeve and held the material to his bleeding temple.
“I didn’t need help, Giles.” The Slayer grumbled, glaring when the ex-Watcher gave a small smirk.
“Yes, because you clearly had everything under control.” He mumbled before wincing when she purposely applied more pressure than was needed.
“Giles is right, Buff. They had you pinned down good,” Xander jumped to the older man’s defense.
“Xander, don’t even start. You’re the reason he fell on that rock,” Buffy turned to give him a look before grabbing the first aid kit Willow had handed to her, thanking her best friend. “Giles, hold still.”
While Buffy took care of the gash on his temple, Willow went to work wrapping Xander’s sprained ankle. By the time Buffy was stitching the wound close, Willow and Xander had made their way to the kitchen to get the snacks out and prepare the frozen pizza they had bought.
“What’s wrong, Buffy?” Giles asked when he noticed the worried look on her face.
“If you had hit that rock any harder, it could’ve killed you.” She whispered as she began putting things back in the kit.
“But it didn’t, and I’ll be fine.” He assured her, placing a hand on her shoulder as he gave her a smile. “Apart from the bruise I’m sure that will be there, the worse that’ll happen is that I’ll have a scar.”
She just looked at him before nodding slightly in agreement, getting up to put the first aid kit away just as the other two friends walked back into the living room with snacks and drinks. It took them a few minutes to get everything ready, Giles being ordered to stay on the couch and relax, and a few more minutes to decide which movie they should watch first. After arguing with Xander about why his injury was not more important than Giles’, they eventually decided on watching Stand By Me, Buffy setting it up as everyone got settled in their spot. Xander had moved to the floor with his back resting against the couch since Willow had took his spot in the chair, while Buffy sat next to Giles on the couch.
“Buffy, I’m alright.” Giles chuckled after he caught her looking at him for the countless time twenty minutes into the movie.
“You could have died, Giles.” She repeated as she moved until she was curled up against Giles’ side. “Dying counts as leaving,”
“I told you I wasn’t leaving, and I don’t plan on dying any time soon.” he moved his arm to hold her closer, doing his best to assure her that he was all right. “Let’s just watch the movie and not think about my mortality, yes?”
She gave a small giggle as she returned her attention to the television, laughing at some comment Xander had made.
