Pairing: Buffy/Giles
Rating: G
Timeline: Right after Eggbert
Synopsis: How is Buffy taking the fact that Eggbert turned out to be part of an evil plot?
Giles watched as Buffy idly traced a pattern on the tabletop with her finger, a glum expression on her face. She had been wearing the same expression all day whenever she was alone, and the Watcher couldn’t figure out what was behind her mood. Sighing, he pushed off the office doorframe and made his way over to his Slayer.
“What’s the matter, Buffy?” he asked as he leaned against the table’s edge next to where she sat.
“I know it’s silly, but I miss Eggbert.” She muttered as she glanced up at him, half expecting to see a disapproving look on his face.
“You took that assignment seriously, didn’t you?”
He would be lying if he said he wasn’t surprised when she nodded her head. Silence settled over them for a few minutes before Giles asked her why she took the assignment so seriously.
“Because it was probably the only chance I had to ever use my motherly instincts,” she answered in a tone that tugged at Giles’ heart.
“You’ll get another chance, Buffy.” He placed an assuring hand on her shoulder as he gave her a small smile. “However, that experience should be nowhere in the near future.”
Buffy giggled at the slight blush that crept up his neck, which caused Giles to chuckle.
“What makes you think I’ll have a chance to be a mom anyways?” she questioned once her giggles had subsided. “I’m the Slayer, remember? A husband and 2.5 kids aren't exactly in my future,”
“2.5 kids?” his brow furrowed as he looked at her, confusion in his green irises.
“It’s an expression, Giles.” Buffy rolled her eyes before she got to her feet, giving her Watcher a grin. “Thanks for cheering me up though.”
“Buffy,” his voice caused her to look back as she made her way to his office to change for training. “I know you’ll get that chance because if any Slayer can live to old age, it’ll be you.”
They shared a quick smile before Buffy entered the office to change.

Buffy just stared at the broken picture frame, shaking her head when her gaze landed on the cause of the mess. Sighing, she carefully picked up the glass shards before anyone got hurt. The Slayer shook her head, not sure how any of this was going to work out.
“He’s gonna kill me,” she groaned as she looked at the puppy, who just wagged his tail before trotting towards the front door.
At the sound of barking, if one could call it barking, the blonde rolled her eyes and carried the glass to the trashcan. The barking stopped and was replaced by a very familiar laugh, which brought a smile to her face.
“You should learn to knock,” Buffy told Giles as he walked into the kitchen, his arms full of an energetic German Sheppard puppy. “Boo, calm down.”
“Why do you insist on calling him that?” Giles asked as he idly scratched behind the dog’s ear. “You named him James, not Boo.”
“But Boo is his nickname,” she explained as she took the puppy from him, placing him down on the kitchen tile. “No different than you calling him Jamie. Anyways, he’s in trouble right now.”
“What did he do?” he asked as he shrugged out of his jacket, draping it over the back of one of the chairs at the kitchen table.
“Decided to be a trouble maker and broke one of my pictures,” Buffy answered as she sent a glare at James, who was playing with one of his chew toys.
Giles just shook his head before walking into the living room, picking up the broken picture frame and laying it on the side table. He muttered something about that photo being one of his favorites before walking back to the kitchen, leaning against one of the counters.
“He could have hurt himself,” was all he said when she raised an eyebrow.
“See? I’m not cut out for doing parenting on my own, Giles.” Buffy sighed. “James has nearly hurt himself several times and I’ve only had him for a week. I told you Eggbert was a glimpse in my future,”
At the mention of the egg, Giles just laughed. It had been a long time since Buffy had brought up that particular school assignment. Buffy asked Giles how his day had gone; trying to put off the real reason she had asked him over.
“It was the same as every day, so why don’t you tell me the real reason you wanted me to come over.” He answered, smirking at the surprise on her face. “You told me that you wanted to postpone our date until tomorrow, and then you call me saying you want me to come over. Of course I know something is going on,”
Buffy grumbled as she walked over to him, leaning against his chest as she tried to think how she wanted to say everything. His arms instantly held her to him as worry washed over him. In the four months they had been dating, he had never seen her this worried over wanting to talk.
“What’s wrong, love?” he asked her.
“You’re gonna hate me and wig out, and probably leave.” She mumbled as she pushed away from him, scooping up James as she sat on the couch. “And then things are gonna go downhill for me and…”
“Buffy, what’s going on?” Giles cut her off, sitting on the coffee table across from her. “And I doubt anything you tell me is gonna make me hate you,”
“It’s not gonna make you love me, that’s for sure.” At his confused look, she just shrugged and ran her fingers through James’ fur before sighing. “I know you’ve noticed that I’ve been a little…off lately, so I went to go find out why and…it’s gonna be like health class all over again.”
“Buffy, you need to talk to me in order for me to understand what you’re talking about.” He took the puppy from her when James gave a little bark and pawed towards Giles.
“You’re gonna leave me and then I’ll be taking care of James and whatever pops out of me in seven months or so, and then I’ll be a single mom for real this time and probably get our kid hurt because I can’t even take care of an egg or a dog,” she complained, keeping her eyes focused on the carpet. “Why in the world would I be able to take care of a real baby by myself?”
When she opened her mouth to continue her ramble, Giles leaned forward and cut her off with a kiss. He pulled back when James began to wiggle out of Giles’ lap, lunging at the tennis ball near Buffy’s foot. The Watcher just chuckled at the look of shock on his girlfriend’s face.
“Buffy, just because I haven’t said that I love you doesn’t mean I don’t,” he told her as he cradled her face in his hand. “I’ve been waiting for the right moment, and I was hoping that tonight’s date would be that moment. Well, now it would be tomorrow’s date.”
“So you do love me?”
“Of course I do, Buffy. How could I not fall in love with you?” he leaned forward again and gave her a soft kiss, moving to kneel in front of her. “And why would you think I would leave you for being pregnant?”
“Because we’ve only been dating for four months,” she replied, absently running her fingers through his hair.
Instead of answering her, Giles lifted her shirt enough to place a kiss on her abdomen. When he looked up at Buffy, he leaned up to kiss her as he noticed the tears swimming in her eyes. Before either one of them could deepen the kiss, James began barking and pawing at Buffy’s leg.
“Looks like our first kid wants attention,” the Slayer giggled as she placed the puppy on the couch next to her while Giles scratched the sweet spot behind his right ear.
“We’ll continue this when Jamie’s sleeping, yes?” he smirked at the wicked gleam in her eyes.
“Most definitely,” Buffy agreed as she laughed when James climbed into her lap, licking both of them before attempting to chase his tail. “For now, we should spend time with Boo.”
“Sounds like a plan,” he leaned forward and placed a kiss on her nose, rolling his eyes when James barked before he kissed the top of the puppy’s head. “I love you, Buffy.”
“I love you too, Rupert.” She shrugged at the question shining in his eyes. “It was a serious moment, so I felt like I should use your first name.”
Giles chuckled as he moved to sit next to her, pulling her close to his side as he handed James his favorite chew toy. As Buffy watched Giles play with her dog, she knew everything was going to be all right. Her hand rested on her abdomen as she watched her two boys play with the chew toy, Giles occasionally brushing his hand over her abdomen.
“You’re gonna be the best daddy in the world,” she told him, recalling the first time she had something very similar eight years ago.
“And you’ll be the best mother in the world,” he replied as he smiled at her. “Just like I always knew you would be. However, if you name our child after Xander I will take that statement back.”
“What about Eggbert?”
They both fell into a fit of laughter, laughing even harder when James tilted his head to the right as if he was trying to understand why they were behaving like that. Growling in frustration, the puppy hopped off the couch and curled up by Buffy’s feet. Giles kissed Buffy once more before they watched whatever show was on the television, a goofy smile on his face at the idea that in about seven months he was going to be a father. Buffy just snuggled into his side and placed a kiss in the middle of his chest; happy to know she didn’t have to do a solo-parenting act.
