Author: the_huffster
Pairing: Buffy/Giles
Rating: R for language and violence
Timeline: Season 4 AU
Synopsis: Giles has landed a job teaching at UC Sunnydale after defeating the Mayor and Buffy ends up, unknowingly, taking Giles' class. Surely all this extra time together won't affect their relationship, right?
“So…one night stands?” Buffy drawled as she swirled her straw around in her water, her eyes focused on the table surface. “How long has that been a thing for you?”
“Um…a little bit before the Mayor’s ascension.” Giles admitted, cleaning his glasses.
“Oh.” Was all she could say.
They made small talk as they waited for their lunch, neither one really knowing how to react to the situation they had found themselves in. After a few minutes of small talk, silence settled over them as Giles tapped his fingers on the table surface while Buffy ripped the straw wrapper into tiny pieces. The longer the silence went on, the more Buffy felt the need to try and figure out this new Giles.
“Why do you have one night stands?” she gave him a look when he raised an eyebrow. “I know why people have one night stands, but I mean why do you have them? I’ve always thought you were better than just sex with a stranger.”
“It’s easier than having a relationship,” he answered, looking up at as he took off his glasses and set them on the table.
“You don’t exactly strike me as the kinda guy who runs from commitment, Giles.” The Slayer countered, putting down the nearly destroyed wrapper.
“With a one night stand, I don’t have to worry about what we do interfering with my relationship. And besides, I can’t exactly have a relationship can I?” he sighed, running a hand through his hair as he leaned back in the booth. “It’s not as if I’m going to find someone who is perfectly okay with what I do and the fact that I spend time with a nineteen year old girl.”
“Ms. Calendar was okay with it,”
“And look how that ended, Buffy.” Giles shook his head as soon as Buffy opened her mouth to most likely apologize. “Even if I were to find someone who was all right with it, it wouldn’t be fair.”
“How would it not be fair?” Buffy questioned, taking a sip of her water.
“Because I would always chose you.” He told her. “And I couldn’t do that to someone I’m dating, especially if things progress to marriage. I can’t get into a relationship knowing that I will chose you when it comes down to it. I can’t have a relationship, nor do I want one.”
Buffy’s head snapped up as soon as she heard Giles’ statement.
“So you would rather spend the rest of your life alone then spend it with someone you love?”
“If spending my life with someone else put them in danger, then I would rather be alone.” Giles said as he placed his glasses back on before giving Buffy a small smile. “And I’m not exactly alone, now am I? I have you, Willow, Xander, Oz and even Anya. Doesn’t sound like I’m alone, Buffy.”
She just nodded and let that conversation die as their food was brought to their booth.

“Please tell me I’m imagining this,” Xander begged as he stared at the bar. “Someone?”
“No, it’s happening.” Oz confirmed as everyone stared in the same direction.
“What is going on?” Xander asked, looking from Willow to Buffy to Oz to Anya.
“It looks like Giles is finding an orgasm friend,” the ex-demon said before she dragged Xander out on to the dance floor.
Buffy, Willow and Oz continued to watch as Giles openly flirted with a woman he had just met. They continued to watch the flirting for a few more minutes before the ex-Watcher bent down to whisper something in the woman’s ear, smirking at the look that was on her face.
“I don’t think your guys’ movie night is happening tonight.” Oz said before saying that he had to get back to the stage.
Buffy watched as Giles made his way out of the Bronze with the woman while Willow looked at Buffy in concern. “You okay, Buff?”
“Yeah, it’s not like I didn’t know about that side of him.” Buffy shrugged her shoulders as she looked at her best friend, giving her a small smile.
“What?” the red head asked.
“The other day, when I was having lunch with Giles, I showed up at his place early and without going into too much detail, I found out he had had a one night stand.” Buffy explained, her gaze dropping to her cup. “He pretty much gloated about the fact that he’s King of One Night Stands.”
“Oh, Buffy…” Willow gave her best friend an apologetic look, giving her a quick hug.
“I don’t even know why I’m…whatever I’m feeling about all of this.” The blonde gave a weak laugh, running a hand through her hair. “It’s not like I’m even in a relationship with him, he can do whatever he wants.”
“Well, you do have the warm fuzzies for Giles so…it’s understandable.” Willow reassured her as she gave her an understanding look. “I know how that goes, remember?”
“I know, Will.” Buffy chuckled. “But it’s not just the whole me having a thing for Giles. I think it’s the fact that I know nothing will ever happen,”
“That’s not true! Who knows, in a few years Giles could have a thing for you too and then…”
“He doesn’t want a relationship,” Buffy cut her off, looking up at her best friend. “He told me when we had lunch earlier this week. I had asked him why he does this, and that was his reason.”
Whatever Willow was going to say, Buffy stopped her by saying she wanted to dance. The Slayer’s hope to distract her friend worked as the two ran out on to the dance floor to where Xander and Anya were- although it helped that The Dingoes had taken the stage at the same time.

Buffy stared at the table top as her and Giles waited for Xander and Willow to return with their drinks. The four of them had agreed to meet up for lunch after their cancelled movie night, and it seemed no one was willing to bring up what had happened the night before.
“If you don’t want to do the movie night, you just have to say so Giles.”
Almost no one, anyways.
“Buffy, I want to do the movie night.” Giles sighed as he looked at her. “I think it’s a brilliant idea for the four us to take one night out of the week and spend time with each other.”
“Yeah, because it seemed like you couldn’t wait to find someone to take home with you fast enough.” Buffy scoffed, mentally kicking herself for sounding jealous.
“You make it sound like I was purposely looking for someone,” he replied.
“It seemed that way, Giles. We were there for fifteen minutes and as soon you ran into someone, you turned into Hugh Hefner.” She pointed out, trying as hard she could to not come off as a jealous ex-girlfriend. “And when she flirted back, it was like you forgot all about me…us. You forgot about us.”
Silence fell over them after Buffy’s statement. The blonde looked over her shoulder to see if Xander and Willow had ordered yet, and groaned when she saw they were in the middle of the line. Why did everyone want to be at the Espresso Pump at that exact moment?
“We can still have our movie night, Buffy.” Giles’ voice made her look back at him, his apologetic expression making her want to hug him. “We’ll have it tonight.”
“Are you sure? Because I don’t want to get in the way of your busy nightlife.” Buffy rolled her eyes at the hurt look that crossed the ex-Watcher’s face before she gave him a small smile. “I’m joking, Giles. But seriously, are you sure you wanna have a movie night? Because if you don’t, it’s fine. I mean…”
“Buffy, I really want to have movie night.” He cut her off, giving her a quick smile. “Unless you don’t want me to…”
“No! I mean, it was my idea for the four of us to have this movie night.” Buffy explained, giving him a smile in return. “Why would I decide to exclude one of the original Scoobies?”
Giles laughed as they fell into a comfortable silence. Buffy looked back over at the counter, laughing when Xander and Willow waved at her before moving even closer to the counter. They were three people away from the cashier, so the blonde estimated another ten minutes before they came back with the drinks.
She turned back to find Giles sharing a knowing smile with a passing woman who looked to be a few years older than herself. Buffy narrowed her eyes she saw a matching expression on the woman’s face before looking back at Giles, who was watching her walk away from them. The Slayer gawked when she noticed his eyes were focused on her retreating backside.
“Do you know her?” she asked, not sure why she was bringing up that topic again.
“I’ve had a few…encounters with her.” He cleared his throat as he began polishing his glasses.
“You have one night stands with the same person more than once?” she raised an eyebrow at him.
“No,” he shook his head, a slight blush creeping up his neck.
“Then how did you have multiple encounters with her?”
“I ran into her outside a bar once, and we…um, well we…uh…” Giles stuttered, his blush intensifying.
“You don’t need to continue, I can figure it out from there.” Buffy cut him off, not wanting to know the exact details. “So then you left with her afterwards?”
“Um, no. I left with someone else,” he muttered, his gaze looking away from Buffy.
“So where does the other encounter occur?” she asked him, lightly chewing on her bottom lip.
“A few weeks later, I ran into her again.” Giles answered as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I left with her that time,”
“I have return with delicious beverages!” Xander announced as him and Willow approached the table, effectively ending the conversation.
Willow and Buffy rolled their eyes as Xander passed out the drinks. As soon as he sat down, Buffy explained the plans for that night.
“Movie night is back on?” Willow asked, a grin breaking out on her face.
“For now anyways,” Xander wiggled his eyebrows as he looked at Giles. “Got any plans for tonight, G-Man?”
“Don’t call me that,” the ex-Watcher glared at the younger man.
Xander opened his mouth to make another comment, but stopped himself when he realized he was on the receiving end of three different glares from his friends.
“You guys are no fun.” he grumbled.

Date: 2011-07-10 05:34 pm (UTC)But I'm glad I got you to come around to this Giles. Although you did make me realize something that I was worried about concerning Giles and his one night stands.
For that, I thank you because it gave me an idea on how to start the next chapter

Date: 2011-07-10 06:05 pm (UTC)I don't think Hef!Giles is totally OOC, I mean we saw him the morning after Olivia. But for me it always was some kind of sad try on his behalf to make Buffy see that he is a man with needs. I still don't see Giles as a man who have frequently one night stands. But you managed to make it believable for me. Your description of him picking up on that woman at the bar was really something I could imagine quite well. He is so much like James in Manchild as Hef! Giles ;)
Does my rambling make any sense?!
