Synopsis: After the events of Chosen, Giles and Buffy have finally become a functioning family. But when Giles' past catches up with him, will Giles and Buffy rise above it or will their family be damaged beyond repair?
Author's Note: Okay guys, this is the last chapter. I'm kinda in this surreal state right now cos this was the very first Buffy/Giles fanfic that I ever wrote. But I don't think I'm finished with this 'verse, not by far. I've decided to go back and write prequels to this, starting from when Buffy and Giles first get together in season 4. So if you enjoyed this fic, keep an eye for the the prequels. And thanks to everyone who's been reading/reviewing since the first chapter.
-12 years later
Evan took his beanie off as soon as he walked into the house, smiling when he heard everyone in the living room. Running a hand through his hair, the 25 year old silently crept into the living room with every intention of scaring one of the family members.
“We see you, Evan.” Buffy pointed out, laughing at the scowl on her son’s face.
“Why do you have to ruin everything, Mum?” he flopped on to the couch, glaring at his mother.
“Because it’s her job,” Brennan laughed as he pulled his baby brother to his feet, hugging him just as Dakota tackled them.
The Slayer rolled her eyes before she walked into the kitchen, deciding to start getting the snacks out. The three brothers rolled around on the floor as they wrestled for a few minutes, Evan ending up being pinned by the twins.
“Alright, I give!” he chuckled, sitting up when his brothers moved to the couch. “You have no idea how glad I am that I only see you two for holidays,”
“Evan!” an excited voice cut off any reply Dakota was going give, Evan falling back to the floor as a dark haired 12 year old launched herself at him.
“Hey, Munchkin!” he laughed as he looked at his sister, giving her a big grin.
“Uncle Evan!” Two small bodies followed their aunt’s actions, causing each father to laugh at their own child.
In the past twelve years, the family had seen a lot of changes. It had taken a lot of time, but Buffy and Giles had worked through their problems enough to put an end to the mildly hatred filled tension just in time for the birth of their daughter, Natalie Summer Giles. By the time the twins had graduated from high school, Brennan had decided against becoming a Watcher and focused on having as normal of a life as he could while Dakota took off to go “find himself”.
It was four years before anyone heard from Dakota, and by that time Brennan had found himself about to start a family with his girlfriend while Evan was getting ready to start college. Dakota had told his parents that he had left for England after graduation and was married with a baby boy, Rupert Oliver Giles. Buffy had laughed when she learned her son had married a Watcher, and Giles had laughed when he learned that his daughter-in-law’s name was Jenny.
Within the next two years, Brennan was raising his daughter, Katelyn Elizabeth, on his own after his girlfriend had left and Dakota had lost his wife to an ambush of demons. While his brothers were becoming single fathers, Evan was working hard to get into Graduate School and Natalie was just focusing on be a normal kid.
The latest change that had happened to the family was when Ethan had come into town, engaging in his favorite pastime of tormenting Giles. He had pulled a few spells that would have ruined Giles’ marriage if Evan hadn’t sensed the magick surrounding his father. The end result of Ethan’s little visit was Giles aging backwards, making him three years older than Buffy- which gave him more time with his family. When his children had asked him why Ethan had done something good, Giles had simply explained that Ethan had lost his father when he was six year old and didn’t want that to happen when he had learned that Giles had an eight year old daughter.
“Dad!” Natalie ran to the front door, wrapping her arms around her father’s waist.
“Hello there, Princess.” He smiled as he hugged her back, laughing when his grandchildren demanded his attention as well.
“Katie, give Grandpa some room to breathe.” Brennan said as he watched his daughter wrap her arms tightly around Giles’ neck.
“He’s not a jungle gym, Ru.” Dakota laughed as his son tried to climb up Giles’ back.
“Good thing your fifty now, huh Dad?” Evan asked as he set up the television to play one of the gaming systems, which caught the attentions of his niece and nephew.
Natalie kissed her father on the cheek before running over to sit between the twins, the three of them watching Evan argue with a seven and a six year old over which video game to play. Giles shook his head and made his way to the kitchen, smiling when she looked at him.
“Hey there, handsome.” Buffy gently kissed him as he held her close to him. “Did you get everything?”
“Of course I did,” he answered as he kissed her again before walking over to the fridge and grabbing a bottle of water. “When Natalie, Rupert and Katie are asleep, I’ll go get their presents out of the car and we’ll wrap them.”
“You are a brave man, Rupert Giles.” Buffy giggled as she leaned against the counter next to her husband.
“And why is that?”
“Going out to get presents five days before Christmas is a brave thing to do,” she smiled up at him as she rested her head against his shoulder. “I think it’s the bravest thing I’ve seen you do.”
“Ah yes, because nearly dying on several occasions wasn’t brave at all.” He chuckled as he brushed his lips over hers. “When will everyone else be here?”
“Dawn’s coming tonight, Xander is coming in tomorrow morning and Willow is coming in the day after Xand.” She shook her head when he opened his mouth to say something. “And each of them is staying in a hotel, so don’t worry. Even I know our house isn’t big enough for their families.”
The sound of laughter from the living room made each of them smile, Giles wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling closer to his side. Buffy placed a kiss in the middle of his chest before resting her head over his heart.
“Did you ever think we would be here, happily married with a wonder family?” she asked as they watched their family from their position in the kitchen.
“There was a time when I didn’t, but I’m glad we are.” He kissed the top of her head as he held her closer. “I love you, Buffy.”
“I love you too,” they shared another kiss before she led him to the living room. “C’mon, let’s go spend time with our family while it’s just us.”
As soon as they sat down on the love seat, Rupert and Katie climbed on to their laps as they each talked their grandparents’ ear off. It hadn’t exactly been a perfect life, or an easy one, but as Giles listened to his grandson while his own children argued with each other about whatever video game they were playing, he knew he wouldn’t have changed anything if he was given the chance. And one look at his wife told him she wouldn’t either.
