Pairing: Buffy/Giles
Rating: R for language and violence
Timeline: Season 4 AU
Synopsis: Giles has landed a job teaching at UC Sunnydale after defeating the Mayor and Buffy ends up, unknowingly, taking Giles' class. Surely all this extra time together won't affect their relationship, right?
While Buffy was off patrolling, Willow had offered to stay back with Giles had do some research- not that there was anything specific that they were researching. They had been looking through several texts for about an hour when Giles finally closed the current book he was reading through and looked at Willow.
“Did I do something wrong?” he asked, putting his glasses on the desk’s surface.
“What?” Willow looked at him, a confused expression on her face.
“Did I do something to make Buffy mad at me?”
“No. What made you ask that?”
“Because it seems as if she can’t be in the same room with me longer than need be,”
Willow took in the worried look on the ex-Watcher’s face and gave him a sympathetic smile. She wasn’t exactly sure what to tell him without giving away what was really bothering the Slayer.
“She’s just tired,” was the first thing that came to her mind. “She’s been studying for mid-terms like crazy and I guess it’s starting to affect her.”
“Are you sure?” Giles ran a hand through his hair as he leaned back in his chair. “Because it feels like I did something…”
“Giles, it’s Buffy. If she was mad at you, you would know it.”
He gave a small chuckle at that, knowing it was the truth. Buffy had never been one to keep her emotions to herself. And when the Slayer was mad, everyone heard about it.

An hour later, Buffy walked through the front door and gave them a small smile.
“How was patrol, Buffy?” Giles asked as he opened his diary to the next available page.
“It was a slow night. About…” she bit her lip in thought as her eyes focused on the ceiling. “Four vamps. Half of them were newborns, so…”
She shrugged her shoulders before looking at her best friend.
“Ready to go, Will?” she asked, already making her way towards the door.
“I could give you two a ride back to your dorm,” Giles offered as he stood up.
“It’s fine. You have class tomorrow, so you should probably try and get some sleep.” The blonde said.
“So do we, Buff.” Willow pointed out, smiling sheepishly at the subtle look she received. “We’d get back to the dorm much faster if Giles dropped us off, and it’s already almost one in the morning. I have class in seven hours, remember?”
“Right,” Buffy sighed, brushing a small patch of dust that she had missed from her shirt. “I forgot tomorrow was Thursday. Yay for classes,”
The trio made their way to Giles’ car, Buffy glaring at the Wicca when she slid into the back and left the passenger seat for Buffy. They were almost at the campus when Willow asked Giles to drop her off at Oz’s place, stating she forgot she would swing by after she got back. Buffy knew exactly what her friend was doing, and wanted nothing more than to strangle her.
“I can walk from here, Giles.” Buffy said, turning to open the door. “Thanks for the ride,”
“Buffy…” Giles grabbed her wrist before she could even open the door. “I said I was sorry about what happened.”
“I know,” she whispered, trying to keep her emotions in check.
“Then why have you been trying to avoid me?” Buffy continued to look out the window, her back facing Giles as he kept his grip on her wrist. “Buffy, if what happened has come between us let me know and I’ll…”
“Leave?”
“If that’s what you want,” he replied, the sad tone of his voice causing her to finally turn and look at him. “I told you, the only way I would leave is if you asked me to.”
“I don’t want you to leave, Giles.” She bit her lip as she tried to hold back her tears at the thought of Giles leaving. “I didn’t mean to be Avoidance Gal. How about this, I’ll come by after class tomorrow and we just have Watcher/Slayer night?”
“I’d like that,” he gave her a soft smile, which grew when she returned with a smile of her own. “Now, let’s get you back to your dorm.”

“Hey, Buffy.”
She turned around and saw Riley running towards her, a boyish grin on his face.
“Hey,” she replied once he finally caught up to her.
“You okay?”
“Yeah, why?”
Riley shrugged a shoulder. “You just seem like you’ve been in a funk the last two days in class. Wanted to see if there was anything you wanted to talk about,”
“No offense Riley, but I have Willow to talk to.” Buffy told him as she started to walk again.
“Maybe you want a guy’s opinion?” he fell into step beside her, one hand gripping the shoulder strap of his backpack.
“I have my friend Xander for that,”
“Okay, but maybe you want an opinion from someone who’s not in your circle of friends.” Buffy laughed at Riley’s determinedness. “I’m a friend, you can tell me.”
Buffy just looked at him with a raised eyebrow as they continued walking across campus.
“Okay, I’m more Willow’s friend but that counts. Right?” he gave her a hopeful smile, grinning when she nodded her head. “So what’s the matter?”
“It’s nothing really,” she sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to buy that as an answer.
“Right, because that’s why you look like this nothing is something.” He laughed before leading her to sit on a near by bench.
“It’s just this thing that happened with a friend over the weekend.” She replied, leaning back in the bench. “I’ve had this thing for my friend for most of the year and…”
“He doesn’t have a thing for you?” Riley hazarded a guess.
“If he does, he’s one hell of an actor.” Buffy looked over at him, not sure why she was about to tell him- it may have had something to do with the fact that he wasn’t part of her circle of friends. “He turned into a somewhat different person after graduation, and at first it was fine but then he started pull his flirting act on me and it just…it was fine until he started doing it more and more.”
“Then he got a girlfriend?” when she gave him a questioning look, he just shrugged. “I’ve helped my fair share of girls with guy trouble back in high school.”
They both chuckled for a brief moment before calming back down.
“He didn’t get a girlfriend,” Buffy focused the walkway as she played with the hem of her shirt. “It’s your typical college story, I guess. Two friends have a little too much drink and end having a one night stand.”
“Except you have feelings for your friend, and he just waved it off as a casual thing,” Riley finished for her, giving her an understanding smile. “Well, it sounds like your friend is an idiot.”
“Riley, you don’t even know him.” She giggled, rolling her eyes at his response.
“Well…it sounds like he’s an idiot.” When she motioned for him to continue, he just shrugged his shoulders and leaned back. “If he can’t see what he has, then he’s an idiot. I mean, if I had a friend as good looking as you, then I’d be trying everything to get you to be my girlfriend.”
Buffy just stared at Riley, a small smile on her face. A moment of silence passed over them.
“If your friend doesn’t wise up, would you maybe wanna do something? Together?” he asked quietly, giving her a sheepish look. “I know it’s awful timing, but…the offer will still stand for an indefinite period of time.”
“I’ll let you know,” she said as she got to her feet, giving Riley a brief smile. “I have somewhere to be. But I’ll see you later,”
Riley just gave her a small wave as she walked off, a smile on his face as he continued to sit on the bench.

“Hey, Buffy.”
She turned around and saw Riley running towards her, a boyish grin on his face.

And as for Riley's skeezy line, one of my good friends actually said that to me a few months after we met in high school. So I had to include that somehow.
