Two months later

“What’s the matter, Nathan?” Rupert asked as he watched his son move his spoon around in his cereal.

“I don’t wanna go to school,” the seven year old mumbled, his head resting in his left hand. “Buffy’s not gonna be my teacher this year.”

Rupert just shook his head before turning his attention to his daughter, who was bouncing excitedly in her chair. Addison was quietly humming to herself as she ate her cereal. His smile grew as he watched his now five year old daughter carefully eat her breakfast and making sure nothing got on the shirt Buffy had bought her for her first day of school.

“Are you excited, Addie?” he asked as he took a sip of his coffee.

“Yep!” she exclaimed, her smiling shining in her dark green eyes. “Nafan needs to cheer up!”

Nathan just glared at his sister before taking a miserable bite of his breakfast. Breakfast lasted another five minutes before they made their way out to the car, Rupert waiting to pull out of the driveway as his children buckled themselves into the back.

“What are you gonna do all by yourself, Dad?”

Nathan asked, trying to fix his hair using the faint reflection in the window.

“I’ll be at the shop,” he answered, glancing into the rearview mirror and laughing when he saw his son try to straighten his faux-hawk.

“You gonna miss us, Daddy?” Addison looked towards the front, her fingers drumming on her backpack.

“Of course I will, Princess.” He assured her, putting the car in park as he pulled up to the front of the school. “Alright, both have a good first day and I’ll be right here to pick you up.”

He smiled as they threw their backpacks on before taking their turn to lean into the front, giving their father a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Nathan got out of the car and waited for his sister to exit the vehicle, talking with one of his friends as he waited.

“I’m gonna miss you, Daddy.” Addison said as she gave him another hug, her nervousness showing in her eyes.

“What’s the matter, Addison?” Rupert asked when he picked up on his daughter’s feelings.

“What if no one likes me?” she whispered.

“I find that hard to believe,” he smiled at the hopeful expression on her face. “You’ll make friends, and I’m sure everyone will like you.”

“Yeah?” a smile made its way on to her face.

“Yes,” he chuckled before kissing the tip of nose. “Now go on. Nathan’s going to show to your class.”

“I love you, Daddy.” She gave him one last hug before scrambling of the car.

Rupert watched as his children walked into the school Nathan holding Addison’s hand and no doubt talking to make her feel better. Smiling, he put the car in drive and made his way to the shop.

“We’re not going to the store?” Nathan asked when he recognized that they were heading to the house.

“Well, it’s fairly busy right now since it’s the first day of school.” Rupert began as he turned on to their street, flashing a smile to him in the rearview mirror. “So, everyone will come over when the shop closes. Plus I want to spend time with you two first,”

Addison grinned at her father, pointing out the window when she saw Buffy leaning against the front door. As soon as Rupert killed the engine, the siblings jumped out of the car and ran towards the blonde. Rupert grinned as he watched her kneel down and hug them.

“I don’t like my teacher!” Nathan complained as he kicked a small rock.

“Why is that, Rabbit?” Buffy asked, picking up Addison and smiling as Rupert made his way to the front door.

“ ‘Cause it’s not you,”

The two adults laughed at the answer as they entered the house. Once they reached the living room, Nathan and Addison took turns telling Buffy and Rupert each about their first day- although Nathan kept grumbling about not having Buffy as his teacher anymore.

They talked until Jess, Trevor, Chris and Blake showed up at the house about two hours later. The group talked for nearly and hour and a half when Chris asked what time it was. Upon hearing what time it was, Nathan proceeded to let everyone know that he was “about to starve to death”.

“Aren’t you lucky that I’m about to fix dinner, then?” his father asked as he pushed himself to his feet, waiting for the expected question form the seven year old.

“What’s for dinner?” Nathan looked up at his father, his head cocked to the side.

“I was thinking about making pizza,” There were cheers from his children, which caused Rupert to laugh. “You lot are more than welcome to stay.”

“We’ve got dinner plans,” Blake answered as he looked at his watch. “Which means we should leave now if we’re gonna make it.”

“And I promised my mother that we’d have dinner with my parents tonight,” Jess added before getting to her feet and pulling her fiancé to his.

“Do you have ta go?” Nathan asked when he saw the four of them stand up.

“Sorry, buddy.” Chris sighed as he gave the children a hug, moving aside so his boyfriend could give them a hug.

They spent five minutes saying goodbye to everyone before they finally left. After making sure pizza was what his children wanted, Rupert headed into the kitchen. As he pulled out everything that was needed, he looked up to seeing Buffy, Nathan and Addison enter.

“Figured we would help,” she shrugged at his questioning look.

“Can I put the cheese on the pizza!” Nathan jumped up and down, making sure his father saw him over the counter.

“I wanna put the pepperoni on!” Addison chimed in as she ran around the counter and tugged on Rupert’s pant leg.

“Oh, can I put the veggies on?” Buffy joined in, giggling at the look her boyfriend gave her.

“How about you two tell Buffy what you want on the pizza,” he laughed as he placed his daughter on the counter while Nathan pulled a chair up to the counter. “And then she can slice everything up?”

“And what are you going to do, Rupert?” she asked, laughing as the five year old told her brother what to grab from the fridge for their pizza.

“I’ll be making the pizza dough,” he grinned before starting his task.

He couldn’t help but glance over and watch his girlfriend interact with his children, a grin making its way on to his face. Rupert shook his head and began working on the dough again, thinking that perhaps he had gotten things right this time.

They had gotten Nathan and Addison to bed and were now sitting on the couch, some movie playing on the television. Buffy was cuddled against Rupert’s side, his arm wrapped around her shoulders as his hand slightly rubbed her arm.

“You’re pretty quiet tonight,” Buffy commented as she looked up him.

“I’m just…thinking.” He turned his head to look at her.

“Should I be worried?” she teased as she budged his side with her shoulder, smiling at his eye roll.

“Why should you worry?”

“I don’t know, you tell me.”

Rupert smiled before collecting his thoughts, knowing he was taking a risk in losing what he had with Buffy.

“I love you, and I need to be honest with you.” He began, not missing the worry that flashed in her eyes. “If I want us to last, then I think you deserve to know exactly what you’re getting yourself involved in.”

“This is making me worry, Rupert.” Buffy made to scoot away from him, only stopping when he grabbed her hand and laced their fingers together.

“It’s nothing bad, at least I hope it isn’t.” he sighed as he looked into her eyes, giving her a small smile. “Would you like to know the complications that ruined my marriage and made me afraid to date?”

Buffy’s eyes widened in surprise, her mouth gaping open as she struggled to answer him. Despite himself, Rupert chuckled at her expression as he adjusted his position into a more comfortable one.

“I’ll take that as a yes?” amusement danced in his eyes.

When she nodded her head, he took a deep breath before telling her everything. Buffy listened to everything he had to say about vampires, demons, Watchers, Slayers and everything relating to that. It took him a little under two hours to properly explain everything and answer her questions, and once he finished neither of them said a word. The longer the silence carried on, the more anxious he grew.

“I, um…I know that it’s a, uh…a bit to take in,” he forced himself to say, his gaze dropping to the couch cushions.

“Yeah,” Buffy mumbled as she just looked the wall to her right. “Just a bit.”

“I’ll understand if you want to stop seeing me,” Rupert whispered as he glanced up at her.

“I think I just need some time to process what you’ve told me,” Buffy told him as she stood up, running her hand through her hair. “I’ll come by Friday, and we’ll talk then.”

He just nodded, mumbling goodnight as she made her way to the front door. Heaving a sigh, he leaned back against the couch and stared at the ceiling.

“It had to be done,” he told himself, hoping that everything would work out.

There was a knock on his front door, which confused Rupert. It was a little bit after eleven in the morning and he knew there was no one he knew who would be visiting him at that time. Chris and Jess were running the shop, Blake was finalizing his plans for his new art show, Trevor was at work- not that he would ever visit Rupert on his own- and everyone else he knew- which was his children and Buffy- were at school.

“Which brings the question, who would be at my door on a Friday morning?” he asked himself as he walked to the door, opening it to see his visitor. “Buffy?”

“Hey,” she smiled as she walked in once he stepped to the side.

“Shouldn’t you be at work?” he asked her, running a hand through his hair when he turned to face her.

“I would be, but I spent the night in the hospital.” She couldn’t but smile at the concern on his face. “I’m fine for the most part. Just a few bruises and a mild concussion.”

“You shouldn’t have driven yourself home,”

“I didn’t. I got a taxi.” She explained, knowing what he was going to ask next. “I went out for a walk around the street and was jumped by some teenagers,”

“Who were they?” he took a few steps closer to her, examining the faint bruise on her jaw. “And you look remarkably well for spending the night in the hospital,”

“I don’t really wanna talk about getting my ass handed to me by some punks,” she reached for his hand, smiling at the shock when she intertwined her fingers with his. “I thought about what you told me Monday night.”

“And?” he swallowed the sudden lump in his throat.

Instead of answering, Buffy moved her arms to circle his neck and gave him a soft smile as she brought his head down so she could give him a kiss. His hands automatically went to her hips as she deepened the kiss, pulling back before things progressed any further.

“I still love you,” she whispered, grinning at the shock on his face.

“So my complications weren’t too scary for you?” he gave her a shy smile.

“I’m still here, aren’t I?”

Laughing, Rupert leaned down and started another kiss. As the kiss became more passionate, he picked her up and carried her up to his bedroom. A groan left his lips when Buffy moved her hips against his erection.

“You’re gonna pay for that,” he growled as he entered his room, placing her on the bed.

“Oh yeah?” she raised an eyebrow as he covered her body with his. “Have anything in mind?”

“Just a few things,” he muttered as he claimed her mouth once again.
