Synopsis: After giving up his life as Ripper, Giles seizes the chance to live a normal life and doesn't return to the Council. But years later when he meets first grade teacher Buffy Summers, he wonders if it's possible to really escape Destiny.
Author's Note: I decided to mess around with the years and make Giles younger just so it will fit with how I have this fic planned out. So please bear with me on the messing with years/ages.
It had been five months since he had come clean to Buffy, and in that time Rupert had yet to see the person he had seen fighting that vampire a few months back again. But at that moment, the mysterious person was the furthest thing from his mind. Right now he was focused on getting ready for his date with Buffy, Nathan and Addison sitting on his bed while they watched him adjust his tie. He flashed them a smile in the mirror once he had finished with his task.
“What do you think?” he asked as he turned around, holding out his arms while his children inspected him.
“Different earring,” Addison said, her eyes focused on the small hoop in her father’s ear.
“Anything else?” Rupert chuckled as he replaced the hoop with the diamond stud he had.
“Why are you so dressed up tonight? It’s not like you and Buffy haven’t gone out before,” Nathan answered as he rolled on to his back, his head hanging over the edge of the mattress.
“Well, tonight’s special.” He explained as he shrugged on his suit jacket.
“Why?” his daughter asked, slightly poking her brother’s chest.
“Because it’s been a year since I started dating Buffy,”
Nathan flipped on to his stomach, cocking his head to the side as he looked at his father. At the sound of a knock on the door, Rupert doubled checked with his children about how he looked before motioning for them to go downstairs with him. He chuckled as they ran downstairs, already arguing for Chris’ attention.
“Wow,” his eyes snapped to the front door when he heard Buffy’s gasp, his mouth hanging open when he saw her. A small smile spread on her lips when she shook her head. “It’s nothing special, Rupert. It’s just my nicest jeans and my nicest blouse,”
“You look stunning,” he muttered as he walked over to her, giving her a soft kiss.
“Ew!” Nathan gagged, hiding his face in his hands while his sister giggled.
“We’ll be back later,” Rupert told Chris as he held the door open for Buffy, quickly giving his children a hug each and telling them goodnight.
“Have fun you two!” Chris smirked, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.
Buffy laughed as Rupert shook his head, muttering under his breath. They got into his car and he just turned in his seat to look at her, a smile on his face.
“Why are you always smiling at me for no reason?” Buffy asked when she noticed the expression on his face.
“I need a reason to smile at my girlfriend?” he raised an eyebrow, leaning slightly closer to her.
“No, but…” she grinned as she leaned closer to him.
“Happy anniversary, love.” He whispered before gently kissing her, smiling against her lips when she returned the kiss.
“One year,” she sighed when he pulled back.
“You sound surprised,” Rupert finally started the car, carefully backing out of the driveway.
“It’s just the longest relationship I’ve been in without something going wrong,” Buffy replied, resting her hand on his thigh. “So, what’s the agenda for tonight?”
“It’s a surprise,” was all he said, grinning at her expression.

“You didn’t have to go through all this trouble, Rupert.” The blonde said as she ate her dessert, blushing when the waiter made a comment of what a cute couple they made as he picked up the debit card Rupert slipped in with the check.
“Of course I did,” he replied, leaning forward slightly. “It’s not everyday that we celebrate our one year anniversary.”
She just rolled her eyes before gaping when he stole a bite of the chocolate cake she had ordered. When she pointed out that he should have gotten his own dessert, he made a point by saying that he had paid for the slice of cake. All Buffy did was stick her tongue out, giggling when her boyfriend leaned over the table and kissed her.
“And what was that for?” she asked when he sat back in his chair.
“Because I had to stop you from putting certain thoughts in my mind,” he answered just as the waiter arrived back with his card. “Thank you.”
“Have a good evening, sir.” The waiter said before leaving them, taking Buffy’s now empty plate.
“What kind of thoughts was I putting in your mind?” she picked up the conversation as they walked out of the restaurant, heading towards the park across the street.
“The kind that involve certain things you were doing with your tongue the other night,” Rupert whispered in her ear, grinning at the look she gave him. “Which is something that I’m hoping can be repeated later on tonight.”
“Only if you play your cards right, Mr. Giles.” She winked before linking her arm through his, leaning her head against his arm as they walked.
They walked in silence for a few minutes, just enjoying the peacefulness of the night and each other’s company. Rupert kept glancing at her every now and then as he thought over the past year, a grin making its way on to his face. He bent his head and placed a kiss on the top of her head, chuckling when she stopped walking and turned to face him so she could lean up and give him a proper kiss.
“I love you,” he smiled, his hands resting on her hips.
“I love you too,”
Just as her lips touched his, a rustling behind her caused them to break a part and turn to face the noise. A small group of three vampires emerged from behind the bushes, Rupert groaning at the idea of his date being ruined.
“Were we interrupting you two?” one of the demons asked, his tongue running over his fangs.
“Actually, you were.” Buffy said as she crossed her arms in front of her chest. “I’m trying to have a nice date with my boyfriend right now, so unless you wanna be a pile of dust I suggest you and your buddies leave.”
“Slayer.” One of the vampires snarled, his gold eyes flickering to her hand when a stake appeared.
Rupert’s head snapped to look at the blonde, confusion falling on to his face at the way Buffy had been identified. He didn’t have much time to ponder about what was going on before she launched herself at the group, Rupert following right behind her. The faster these vampires were taken care of, the faster he could figure out what the hell was going on.
It took them a good twenty minutes to slay the creatures, Rupert pushing himself to his feet as he brush the dust off his clothes. He looked at Buffy, an unreadable expression on his face.
“You’re the Slayer?” he asked, running his hand through his hair.
All she could do was nod her head.
“And you didn’t tell me?” Rupert shook his head as soon as the words left his mouth. “Were you going to tell me?”
“Yeah, but then you told me about you and I thought…I didn’t think it mattered.” Buffy sighed as she took a step towards him, stopping when he took a step back.
“You didn’t think it mattered?” he looked at her as if she had grown an extra head. “You’re the bloody Slayer, Buffy. You attract vampires and the like, which puts my children in danger. So yes, it mattered if you told me because I would like to know the chances of my kids getting attacked when they’re with you!”
“Rupert…” Buffy just looked at him, thinking of something to say.
“No, don’t. You kept this from me, and if I wasn’t a father then I wouldn’t really have cared.” He stated as he looked at the ground. “But I am a father, Buffy. And with you not telling me, especially after I tell you that I know all about that life, I feel like there’s nothing you would have an issue keeping from me.”
“What does that mean?” she asked.
“You didn’t tell me you were the Slayer after I told you I was supposed to be a Watcher, after you knew that I wouldn’t run off thinking you were mental…” he took a breath to calm himself, pinching the bridge of his nose before he looked up at her. There was hurt and betrayal in his green eyes, and it killed Buffy to know that she had caused him to feel like that. “It makes me wonder if you keep something more important form me. Something like you having an affair or something,”
“How could you even think I would do that?” anger flared in her hazel eyes at the suggestion that she would do such a thing. “I love you, Rupert.”
“And yet you were never going to tell me that you were the Slayer! This isn’t about me, Buffy. You keeping this from me puts my children in danger,” he stressed the main point of his unhappiness about the situation. “I may love you, but I love my children more. And right now…right now I feel it would be best if we just…stopped.”
“What?”
“I can’t stay with someone who would willingly keep something from me at the chance of Nathan and Addison’s safety.”
Silence fell over them as his words sunk in, neither one looking at the other. Rupert cleared his throat and motioned to his car.
“I’ll drive you back to your house,” he mumbled as he slowly made his way towards the vehicle. “I wouldn’t make you walk all the way back.”
Buffy just nodded before numbly following him.

“Wow, I wasn’t expecting you back so soon…” Chris commented when Rupert walked into the living room, tugging off his tie roughly. “Rupert?”
The older man didn’t say a word. Instead, he reached into his trouser’s pocket and threw the small box towards the couch, not caring if it hit Chris or not. Shocked, the younger man picked up the velvet box and opened it up.
“You proposed to her?” he asked, his grin fading when he watched his employer down the glass of scotch he had poured himself. “I’m guessing she said no?”
“I didn’t even get to ask her, did I?” he snarled as he poured himself another drink, downing half the glass in one go. “No. She had to go and be the bloody Slayer and never say a word to me. Not even when I risked looking like a fucking lunatic by telling her all about everything she already knew!”
Chris just sat on the couch and listened as Rupert ranted about the evening, anger and hurt mixing into his tone at every word. The rant lasted a few minutes before Rupert finally just looked at his third glad, tears filling his eyes as he thought over the evening.
“I knew it was too good to be true,” he muttered before finishing the glass. “There had to be a catch, I just wish it wasn’t that I had fallen in love with the Slayer. I’m sorry, Chris.”
“Don’t be,” he said, quickly walking over to him.
“I won’t be coming into the shop tomorrow,” Rupert warned. “Won’t do business good if I come in hungover.”
With that said, he poured his fourth glass and down that one just as quickly.
“Take the ring with you, I don’t have any use for it.” He pushed himself to his feet, not looking at Chris. “Do with it as you please. Good night,”
Chris just stood in the living room, confusion washing over him, as Rupert walked into the downstairs study. After a moment, he heard the shattering of glass and shook his head. He knew it would do him no good to go check on Rupert at the moment, so instead he called Blake and explained the situation. Once he had hung up, he made his bed on the couch and tried his best to sleep.
