Fic: Angels on the Moon
Apr. 4th, 2011 06:17 pmTitle: Angels on the Moon
Author: the_huffster
Pairing: Buffy/Giles
Rating: G
Timeline: Nine years after 'Fix You'
Synopsis: Nine years later, and Trenton is proving that he's more aware than Buffy and Giles think. And Buffy realizes just how extraordinary Trenton really is. Based loosely on Thriving Ivory's 'Angels on the Moon'
Author's Note: Yet again, this leaves open the option of a sequel. I already have a few ideas for it if that's what everyone wants.
“Mum! Dad and Amy are cheating!” the seven year old complained, running a hand through his dark blond hair in frustration just like his father.
Buffy just shook her head as she watched her family play soccer (or “football” as Giles kept reminding her), her left hand resting on the slight baby bump. Giles just chuckled before passing the ball to the dark haired five year old girl, scooping her up in his arms when she scored.
“Don’t worry Alex, we’ll show ‘em.” Trenton reassured his brother, nudging his shoulder before chasing after the soccer ball.
The past nine years had seen Giles and Buffy married, the birth of their seven year old son Edward Alexander (although he insisted on being called Alex), the birth of their five year old daughter Amelia Rose and Trenton’s fast approaching eleventh birthday; much the mixed feelings of the Scooby gang. While he never showed it, the Scoobies knew Giles was in a panic 24/7. And so were they.
No cure had been found for Trenton’s condition, but Giles had refused to give up. If it wasn’t for the two little ones, Buffy was sure that her husband would lock himself in his library and not come out until he either found a solution or the poison did what it was designed to do. She would have allowed herself to get further lost in thought, but the sight of Trenton jogging over brought her back to reality.
“Hey, Buffy.” He grinned, plopping into the chair next to her.
“Hey, Trent.” She greeted before laughing at the sight of her son and daughter tackling Giles to the ground.
“So how’s Mini-Dad?” the boy asked, glancing at his stepmother.
“What makes you so sure it’s a boy?”
“Just a feeling,” he shrugged, rubbing the side of his neck.
There was a slight pause before Buffy sighed and turned to look at the 10 year old. “What’s on your mind, Trenton?”
“Who says there’s something on my mind?” he replied, leaning back in the chair and running a hand through his hair.
“Because you have the exact same look your father gets when he wants to have a serious talk with me.” She giggled when he raised an eyebrow at her, not thinking for the first time how much he was exactly like Giles.
“So again I ask, what’s on your mind?”
“I haven’t been sleeping well in the past three months,” he muttered as his hand absently rubbed the scar that was hidden by his t-shirt. “After the first week of not getting some sleep, I looked through some of Dad’s books just to have something to do until I fell asleep.”
“Find anything interesting?”
“I did, but can you promise not to tell Dad what I found?” Trenton waited until Buffy promised, taking a deep breath before continuing. “The reason I don’t sleep well is because my heart races to the point where it hurts, I feel like I’m burning up from the inside and it feels like there’s acid running through me instead of blood. Turns out that’s the same description for this poison that’s released by some demon that I’m not even gonna try to pronounce.”
Buffy felt her heart stop as Trenton explained what he had read, her eyes darting to where Giles was.
“And this demon leaves a scar on its victims…the same scar I got when I was two.” He finished, rubbing the back of his neck. “How come I didn’t die six months after I got attacked?”
“Maybe you should have this conversation with Giles,” the Slayer said, biting her lip.
“No, Dad’ll just worry. And I don’t want him to,” he explained, his bright green eyes silently pleading her to not get his father. “Please, Buffy. The book said there was no cure…”
“And there isn’t. But your dad found something to slow down the effects enough to make it…” she trailed off as she looked for the right word.
“To make it stall?" Trenton supplied. “Can you do me a favor? There’s a letter that I wrote Dad once I realized that I’m not gonna make it past three months…can you give it to him? It’s in that Scooby Doo lunch box Willow gave me when I turned five.”
“Of course, I will.” Buffy said as she leaned forward and ran her fingers through his hair. “But I won’t need to because your father is still looking for a way to stop this. We all are, Trent.”
“I know, but…” he just shrugged his shoulders as he trailed off. “The letter just says that Dad shouldn’t feel guilty because it wasn’t his fault, that I understand why he never said anything and that I’m okay- everything’s okay. But make sure he doesn’t punish himself for what happened because I know he will.”
They both smiled before Trenton continued.
“I also said that I don’t want my mom having anything to do with the funeral. She can be there, but that’s it. And I wanna be cremated.” He chuckled at the knowing smirk on his stepmother’s face. “And there’s this little…will, I guess…that’s in there. Nothing serious, just little stuff. Like I want Amy to have that MMA shirt she loves so much, Alex gets my comics, Mini-Dad gets Wendell and…this one needs to happen, okay? Even you have to fight Dad for it, make it happen.”
Again he waited until she agreed and then took a breath, releasing it before finishing.
“I want you guys to make Mini-Dad’s middle name be ‘Trenton’.”
Silence settled over the two, the giggles of Alex, Amy and Giles the only sound in the backyard. Buffy held back the tears that had formed, giving Trenton a soft smile as she gave him her word.
“You know there’s nothing me and your father won’t do to figure this out,”
“I know. And that’s what scares me about Dad.” Trenton whispered. “I don’t want him turning to dark magicks to save me. As much as I’d like to live, I don’t want Alex, Amy and Mini-Dad to lose Dad because of me.”
Buffy nodded her head, understanding that all too well. While she didn’t know for sure if she would stop Giles from using dark magicks, she did know that that option was a win-lose situation all around.
“And one more thing, except I want this one to happen now.” The 10 year added on, a shy smile forming. “Do you mind if I call you ‘Mum’? I mean, you’re more of a mother to me than my real mom. So I was thinking that um…if you didn’t mind…”
“Trenton,” she softly cut him off, a small grin on her face. “You can call me whatever you want…except ‘home wrecking whore’, I draw the line at that. But I’d be honored if you called me ‘Mum’.”
“Cool,” Trenton grinned as he threw his arms around Buffy. “I love you, Mum.”
“I love you too, Trent.” She kissed his cheek before he ran back off to join his brother and sister, saying a quick ‘Hi, Dad’ as Giles made his way towards his wife. “Hey, honey.”
“Hello,” he placed a quick kiss on Buffy’s lips when he gently pulled her to her feet, placing his hand on abdomen for a few seconds before sitting down in her abandoned her chair and pulling her on to his lap. “What were you two talking about?”
“Things,” she smiled as she draped her left arm around his shoulders, her fingers running through his slightly curly hair. “You need a haircut. And so does Alex for that matter,”
“I’ll take him and we’ll get our haircuts tomorrow,” Giles said as he slightly nuzzled her neck while his hand rubbed circles on the slight swell. “Is everything alright?”
Buffy leaned back to look at him, recognizing the fact that he had picked up on her mood. She wouldn’t lie to herself; she wanted to tell him about her conversation with his son. But Trenton had made a good point by saying that Giles would only worry if he knew that Trenton was aware of what his future was, and that the poison was in effect now.
“We should get a dog,” she said, smiling at the look of surprise on her husband’s face. “You want one, the kids want one…so, why not?”
“I’ll look into it tomorrow.” Giles chuckled at the look she gave him. “After the haircuts,”
“That’s what I thought you said,”
Just as their lips touched in a soft kiss, they were interrupted.
“Mummy! Daddy!” Amy called as she ran to the porch stairs. “Come play,”
“What are we playing?” Buffy asked as the two adults followed the little girl to her brothers.
“Football!” the three children chorused, Alex kicking the ball towards his father.
“It’s soccer, guys.” The Slayer laughed.
“Football,” she found herself on the end of four different versions of the Giles Glare, causing her to laugh even harder.
“Since I clearly don’t know what the sport is called, how about I just keep score?” she suggested, settling down under one of the trees in the yard.
As she watched her family, Buffy found herself hoping that just this once everything really would be fine; that some higher power would take pity on them and save Trenton. But when she saw the grin on the 10 year old’s face and heard his bark of laughter, she knew they were lucky to have the past nine years together.
And that was something neither she nor Giles would trade away.

Date: 2011-04-05 01:36 am (UTC)Ok so first I love this girl's name Amelia Rose. And the fact that she goes by Amy.
Second, I LOVE Trenton! I was surprised to see that you had him find out his fate and be extremely mature about it. Then you had this awww-worthy moment of him asking Buffy if he can call her mom, and then I snorted out laughing when she's says “You can call me whatever you want…except ‘home wrecking whore’.
I can't wait to see what direction you decide to take this series.

Date: 2011-04-05 01:41 am (UTC)And the way I imagine it, any kid of Giles' is gonna be mature about stuff like that. Although, I think the idea I'm gonna go with is gonna earn me some hate from people...but it'll be so worth it in the end.
Glad you love the series (cos you better since I keep putting off my other series for this one lol)
