Author's Note: This idea came to me while (as always) I was talking to
bobbymcg and she had pointed out how there needed to be a story about Buffy and Giles having matching tattoos. This is the result of that conversation.
“Giles…I am not gonna be able to keep this stupid tattoo a secret from everyone.” Buffy complained as she barged into her Watcher’s apartment, taking no notice to the fact that she startled him until his chair fell backwards- taking him with it.
“Ow.” Giles groaned as pain shot through his back.
“I mean, sure…the make-up covers the tattoo, but it itches and make-up fades throughout the day.” Hazel eyes stared down at him as she resisted the urge to itch the back of her neck.
“Don’t worry about me, I’m alright.” He muttered as he gingerly got to his feet, wincing at the instant soreness in his back.
“Oh…sorry.” Buffy replied, picking the chair back up as Giles made his way to the couch. “Anyways, it’s only been a day since Ethan tattooed me and someone almost noticed it.”
“Buffy, I’m sure it’s not as bad as you think it is.” Giles sighed as he ran a hand through his hair.
“Not as bad as…” the Slayer flopped on the cushion next to Giles, giving him a look. “Giles, I have a tattoo on the back of my neck. Mom is gonna wig if she’s see this, and I know exactly what she’ll think- I’ll be just another stupid teenager who made a thoughtless decision to mark up my body with a dumb symbol and…”
She trailed off at the expression on Giles’ face, his right hand rubbing the area where his tattoo was. They sat in silence for a moment as Buffy continued to watch him rub his left bicep, almost as if he could erase the mark from his skin.
“I didn’t mean…”
“Yes, you did.” Giles chuckled sadly, glancing up at her. “The only difference is that I was a stupid adult who made a thoughtless decision and not a teenager.”
Buffy opened her mouth in protest, but no words came out. The look on his face just made her feel even worse about her poorly chosen words- having her insult him wasn’t something he needed to hear after being dumped by Ms. Calendar. Giles looked at her and put his hand on her shoulder, giving her a comforting smile when she looked at him.
“It’s alright, Buffy.” He assured her.
“Why do you always do that?” Buffy questioned as she picked at imaginary lint on her jeans.
“Do what?” he seemed to just remember that his hand was still on her shoulder and quickly removed his hand, earning a giggle from Buffy at his sheepish smile.
“I make a jab at you, and you’re the one trying to make me feel better.” She leaned against the backrest of the couch, her hand rubbing the back of her neck as the itch became unbearable.
“You weren’t trying to insult me, Buffy.” He smiled that smile he saved only for her, which coaxed a smile from her. “Besides, I know perfectly well how stupid I was back then.”
Buffy couldn’t help but laugh when she heard him laugh, something she didn’t hear often enough. They laughed for a minute or two before they could compose themselves enough to have a conversation. They fell into a comfortable silence after an hour or so, and Buffy couldn’t help but giggle as Giles tensed when she leaned against him.
“I bet we’re the first Slayer and Watcher to have matching tattoos,” she looked up at Giles and gave him her 1000-watt smile.
“That we are,” Giles chuckled as he pulled her close to him in an attempt at a hug.
As they launched into another conversation, Buffy realized that there were worse things that could’ve happened to her than getting a tattoo.

“If one more vampire makes a sexual joke about me, I swear I’ll pull an all-nighter and stake the whole fucking town!” Buffy yelled as she stormed in through the front door, stopping mid-step when she couldn’t find Giles. “Giles?”
“I’m here,” he answered, his voice tinged with pain.
“You okay?” she asked as she made her way into the living, confusion showing in her eyes.
“Bloody wonderful,” he winced as he pushed himself into a sitting position and glared at her from the other side of the couch. “Except that I’m going to have another bruise on my back.”
It didn’t take her long to realize that she had caused him to fall off the couch, but his glare caused her to stop giggling. Rolling her eyes, she made her way around to Giles and helped him up on to the couch before sitting next to him.
“Why do vampires feel the need to hit on me, Giles?” she paused for only a second before continuing her tirade. “There is nothing attractive about having a vampire look at me like I’m a piece of meat and saying, ‘I can’t wait to taste you’ before giving me those disgusting looks Spike used to give me.”
Giles chuckled at the dramatic shudder Buffy gave at the memory, which earned him a slap on his arm from his Slayer.
“Ow!” he yelped, rubbing his arm. “What was that for?”
“You’re not supposed to laugh at that!” she explained before pushing his hand away and rubbing the area she had hit, her fingers tracing over the tattoo on his bicep as her hand absently rubbed the back of her neck where the same tattoo used to be.
“A part from all of that, how was patrol?” he asked, his right hand gingerly rubbing his left side.
“Pretty boring,” she shrugged. “Although, I did find the demon that wailed on you last night.”
Giles just shook his head at Buffy’s description of the previous night’s events, which had resulted in him having four broken ribs, a mild concussion and nice size gash on his right temple. After he had been taken care of, Buffy had forbidden him from patrolling with her until he had recovered.
“Did you take care of it?”
“No, I let it get away so he can kill you next time.” She rolled her eyes as she took his left hand in hers and idly played with his fingers. “Of course I took care it.”
He just laughed and shook his head as the Slayer leaned against him, moving his arm so it rested on her shoulders. She spent the next half hour telling him about patrol and another twenty minutes ranting about how sick she was of having vampires hit on her.
“And you do nothing to stop them from making lewd remarks about me,” she pointed out as she tried her best to copy his infamous glare, knowing it didn’t have the same effect as soon as he smiled. “You just sit there and let them talk about me like that, and it makes me wonder if…”
Giles cut her off with a soft kiss, pulling back before she could deepen it. He shook his head when Buffy pouted.
“Not on the couch, love. I don’t think I could survive another fall,” they both giggled before she snuggled against him.
They sat in silence as Buffy ran her finger over the wedding band on his left ring finger.
“I bet we’re the first Slayer and Watcher to have matching rings,” she grinned as his right hand reached for her left hand, lifting her hand up to place a kiss on her ring finger. “I love you, Giles.”
“I love you too, Buffy.” He allowed her to pull him to his feet and followed her to their bedroom.
